Casterton Cricketers best in the Borough

Three teams from Casterton Primary School have become the best in the borough of Burnley for their age and category.

The year 5 and 6 mixed team came a close second in the local competition held at Burnley Cricket Club, securing a place in the County Championships.

At the county competition, the team performed fantastically well finishing third overall in the county and the highest ranked team from Burnley.

A week later, the girls team won their local competition convincingly, which gave them a place in the County Finals. Again, the girls produced some fantastic cricket, losing narrowly in the Semi-final. They did, however, take third place overall in the county.

Finally, the school’s year 5 and under team have just won their local competition, which was held at Lowerhouse. The team, consisting of year 3, 4 and 5s played against mainly year 5 players, which didn’t faze the players at all, leading to them producing some excellent team displays and ultimately winning the competition, securing a place in the County Championships, which take place in the next few days.

MarkDutton the sports coach for the school, said, “I am extremely proud of all of the children and the effort they have put in to becoming so successful. As a school, we encourage the children to play lots of sport on the yard; a particular interest for the children has become cricket, with 3 pitches being used every playtime. This has not only had a beneficial effect in sporting terms, but also in teaching the children the values of teamwork and respect through sport.”
