STONYHURST College teacher Alex Loney was another East Lancashire-based player in the County ranks but this time he tasted defeat rather than victory.
Loney, who has previously captained Lancashire to glory in the County Championship final - the Bill Beaumont Cup - at Twickenham could not prevent the Red Rose county slipping to a rare final defeat against Cornwall.
Since 2003, Lancashire have only failed to reach two finals - in 2004 and 2008 - and in that time have won the trophy seven times, including under the leadership of the teacher at the Clitheroe school.
Lancashire have won the last two finals at Twickenham - both against Cornwall -but this season it proved to be third time lucky for Cornishmen.
Loney (pictured, right), who has played as hooker in the past but it now a prop, plays for Fylde and has had previous spells at French club Avignon and also at Rotherham Titans.
