IT doesn’t get much better than winning a cup on Turf Moor for a Burnley youngster- so to have the trophy handed over by Clarets boss Sean Dyche was just the icing on the cake.

Shuttleworth College were crowned the Keighley Cup kings after a slender 1-0 victory over Unity College to follow up their 2011 success.

But there was added delight for the Padiham team when captain Declan McCluskey climbed the steps to receive the cup off Dyche.

“The lads didn’t actually know Sean Dyche was presenting them on the night so it was an unexpected surprise,” said manager Danny Campbell.

“They were delighted when they found out . It was a lovely touch by Mr Dyche to make an appearance and we as a squad and staff are very grateful - it rounded off a great night in style.”

While it was Shuttleworth’s second win in five years, the school had previously not lifted the cup for many years.

But the current crop are a talented bunch and they are the defending Burnley Schools Cup holders.

“Prior to winning the Keighley Cup in 2011, it was decades ago, back in the Gawthorpe days,” added Campbell. “But we are the Burnley Schools cup holders and five of the boys are off to the Lancashire Schools FA trials in July which shows how well they are progressing.”

The format for the competition has changed in recent seasons with the semi finals and final played on the day - as well as the Hartley Cup and School Sports Partnership Cup - to give more youngsters the chance to sample the Turf Moor experience.

In their semi-final, Shuttleworth ran out comprehenisve 5-1 winners against Blessed Trinity - with Brad Ditch scoring a memorable hat-trick.

The other goal scorers were fellow strikers Mason Hughes and Harry Kerrigan but it was a fine team performance that sealed Shuttleworth’s progress.

In the second semi final, Unity College got the better of Sir John Thursby.

The final proved to be a tighter affair, with Shuttleworth up against Unity College – a team they had never beaten previously. However, it was another determined, all-round team display that led the side to glory.

Once again, it was Brad Ditch who did the damage, scoring with a poacher’s header after a corner from Lennon Steen had hit the crossbar and fell invitingly for the Shuttleworth striker.

While there was a touch of good fortune about the goal, Shuttlworth created their own luck with hard work and, as in the semi-final, some real quality in defence, midfield and attack – not to mention debutant Jason Woolford’s calming and assured performance in goal. Midfielder Liam Gidley also impressed with his secret weapon - a bullet-like throw-in that created at least three chances in both games!

And the day was completed for Shuttleworth when Dyche handed over the silverware.
