READ’S Henry Duerden was completely overwhelmed as he was named Player of the Year at the annual presentation buffet for the Dorothy Southworth Indoor Bowling league played at the Roefield Leisure Centre Clitheroe.

This award completed a notable double for Henry and his Read team-mates having become the first winners of the newly introduced team knock-out competition.

The final against former league champions Waddington Red was a close encounter.

On mat one Read represented by Les Hart, Geoff Barrett and skip Kevin Crook were comfortable winners against Bill and Wendy Rome, winning 20-12.

Mat two however was a totally different affair with Waddington’s Kevin Ryder, Jack Arthur and George Rushton opened up a 12-3 shot lead.

Read’s Gavin Ward, Keith Bradshaw and skip Henry Duerden rallied strongly in the final third and the final score was 22-15 in Waddington’s favour - giving Read victory with a final aggregate score of 35-34!!

The event which was attended by the mayor of Clitheroe, Cllr Val Cooper who presented awards to league champions ‘The Tigers’ and runners-up Waddington Red as well as to the knock-out winners Read.

However pride of place at the presentation was to Henry Duerden of Read as the league’s Player of the Year- an ward.

Henry said: “I never expected this and can’t really believe it. I am totally overwhelmed.”
