ACCRINGTON Girls and Ladies Football Club turned on a first half super show to claim the championship crown on a dramatic final day of the season.

With three teams still in with a shout of lifting the title, including CMB, it was the title decider to end all title deciders.

The outcome was clear, a win for either Accrington or CMB would result in them taking the league while the draw would have given Penrith the title.

It was the third time these two sides had traded blows this term, but the Accy girls lifted the Division One North-West Regional Women’s league title with a feast of attacking football to cap another splendid season.

CMB came closest to making an early breakthrough, Mel Darby threatening the Accrington goal, before her progress was halted by a last ditch challenge.

But a minute later Accrington were ahead, Leah Embley played a cross field ball to Becky McEwan who cleverly chipped over the advancing keeper to give them the lead.

Accrington were in top gear now and their slick passing game was threatening to overwhelm CMB.

And they needed just five more minutes to double their lead.

Once again it was danger girl McEwan who was involved in the goal but this time she turned provider for Kerry Bamford, who had escaped her marker with a timely run, to head home.

Ten minutes later Accy had one hand on the title, as CMB conceded for a third time.

Another attack saw Amelia Ripley fire a shot on target, and although her effort was smartly saved by Rebecca Whittam, hot-shot Bamford doubled her goal tally, converting the re-bound, as Accy went in at half-time three goals in front.

CMB, desperate for a way back into the game, began the second half with three up front, and it paid off when Nicola Uren scored.

Suddenly, CMB were in the groove and another spell of frantic pressure saw Accy concede again, this time Simone Whalley punishing them to reduce the arrears to a single goal.

By this stage, Acrington were struggling to kick-start the passing game that had brought them so much reward in the first half, and were looking more likely to concede again.

Accy brought on substitute Beth Harrison for the hard-working Jenny Simpson, who had grafted so hard for the cause in a bid to add some fresh legs in the final period of the contest.

Still, the result remained in the balance as CMB pressed hard for a leveller, with their forward Darby a constant menace to the home defence.

However, the result was finally settled – and the title – in the 77th minute when McEwan was on hand to produce a fine opportunist strike.

Spotting the CMB goalkeeper off her line, she guided the ball into the net much to the delight of the Accrington supporters.

Accrington could have added to their tally late on, McEwan providing the ammunition for Bamford who was denied a hat trick by a late block.
