THE Clitheroe and District Snooker League sponsored by Youngs Beers of Burnley held its annual presentation night at the Clitheroe Royal British Legion last week.

In a packed house, the large crowd were entertained by the very funny comedian Archie Kelly, better known as ‘Kenny Senior’ from Phoenix Nights, and the top rock singer Nicki from Bolton.

In what proved to be a very competitive season, the Royal British Legion tipped Low Moor to the league title on the last game of the season.

However, the Low Moor boys took solace in turning on the style in winning the team knockout in defeating last year’s cup winners Chatburn A and denying them back-to-back cup triumphs.

The singles winner was the Social Club’s John Birkbeck who won 3-2 against last year’s champion Low Moor veteran Marc Holmes in what was a truly thrilling match.

The final went down to the wire and lasted almost four hours in a packed Clitheroe Con Club.

John Birkbeck completed the double in also winning the pairs knockout with his team colleague Dave Moore, defeating Chatburn A pair Paul Clark & Gary Simkin, who were also last year’s runners-up, again held at the Con Club.

This year saw two breaks of over 100 in a competitive league game.

Royal British Legion player Mark ‘the magician’ Riley made a 108 break at the Legio.

However, Riley’s big break this was surpassed by a ton-derful effort from the Low Moor star player Marc Holmes who completed a 126 break also on his home table -which is the highest ever break in the league’s history.

The evening was brought to an end with a free supper and a bottle raffle and thanks went to the league sponsors, the hosts Susan and Sarah Garner and the league chairman Anthony Wilson for his continued time and effort in ensuring the league continues.
