ACCRINGTON Girls & Ladies FC are organising a special event as their contribution to the Towns First World War Commemorative events.

The club will present a unique ‘historic’ event in the town’s history on Wednesday, May 6 and starts at 7.30pm at the Peel Park Pub, Turkey Street, Accrington.

The event will be a real ‘game of two halves’ with author Gail J Newsham the special guest in the first half and former England star Rachel Brown-Finnis - who used to play for Accrington - the guest in the second half.

Newsham, who wrote In A League Of Their Own, will give a talk about how a group of Ladies from a Preston Factory formed a football team during the Great War and played in front of crowds of 50,000 on one occasion at Everton.

The famous Dick Kerr Ladies were formed and played exhibition matches that helped raise funds for charity.

Former England keeper, Brown-Finnis, will speak about her journey from playing at Accrington to starring for Everton Ladies and England - gaining more than 80 caps - through to representing, Team GB at the London Olympics in 2012.

And ‘extra time’ will be played featuring an opportunity to question both guests as we explore the social impact of the First World War on the community. During which the Dick Kerr Ladies were started and to the comparisons of the barriers that women faced in playing the beautiful game of football.

The Peel Park Pub, Accrington has played its own part in ‘footballing’ history, as it’s sited near to the original ground for the famous Accrington Stanley where the Dick Kerr Ladies played, one of several exhibition matches in the town and in 1921 front of over a 5,000 crowd.
