ST BEDE’S Girls Under 16s travel to the home of Birmingham City on Friday looking to extend their remarkable record in national cups and create their own little bit of history.

The super Saints are out to make it three national titles – with many of the team having been a part of the Blackburn school’s two previous successes.

St Bede’s were crowned Under 13s champions at Bristol Rovers in 2011 and earned the Under 16s crown last year when they won at Reading FC.

Now the tour of football stadiums continues this Friday when they travel to the home of Birmingham City where they will be up against the one team that have blotted their National Cup copy book.

For the Saints take on a Stratford Upon Avon side who beat them 5-1 in the semi finals back in 2012 – the only defeat St Bede’s have suffered in the time.

However, they go to St Andrew’s full of confidence after beating a very good South Hunsley side 10-2 in the semi finals.

The Saints are no strangers to the big stadiums and have also played at The Emirates in a seven-a-side competition and The Reebck.

Coach John Turner is hoping his talented team can take that form in to the final – and avenge that defeat from three years ago.

“In all the time I have been working with girls football teams, this is by far the most talented,” said Turner. “A lot of them played in that Under 13s that triumphed in 2011 and since then they have just got better and better.

“It would be incredible for the school to win a third national title and it would be quite fitting if it was against Stratford Upon Avon, the team who beat them a few years ago.”

And if St Bede’s repeat them form that defeated South Hunsley, then they will take some stopping.

The Saints were simply in a different class to their Hull rivals and they opening the scoring with less than two minutes on the clock when captain Megan Hester found Ali Johnson wide on the left and she cut in and drilled a shot home.

Johnson then turned provider as she cross for Gabby Taylor to make it 2-0 with a smart finish before Hunsley gave St Bede’s a bit of a wake-up call - hitting them on the break with Natasha Franklin scoring for the visitors.

But St Bede’s were relentless going forward and another cool finish from Johnson and a powerful header from Brenna McPartlan – the in-form Johnson again the provider - putting St Bede’s firmly in control.

Ellie Brindle got in on the scoring act with a sweet half volley before Beatrice Wood pulled one back for Hunsley.

But any faint hopes of a comeback for the Hull side were quickly extinguished when Tiana Thompson made it 6-2 just before the break.

In the second half, St Bede’s continued to power forward and Hester scored a superb individual goal, surging in the area following a mazy run and drilling her effort beyond the keeper.

McPartlan made it 8-1 when she powered in her second from the edge of the area before substitute Rose Abbott entered the fray and promptly got on the score sheet with a 15 yard volley.

And it was left for captain Hester to round off the scoring with her second.

The Saints would love a repeat performance against Stratford but would settle for just the one goal if it meant another national success story.

The school have won countless cups, winning both borough and county titles.

But adding another national trophy would be the icing on the cake.
