THE Blackburn and Darwen Sports Council holds its 25th sports awards in its current format and is inviting everyone to attend to make it a night to remember.

The council has already invited previous team and individual winners but was as many members of the public to attend the special night of sporting celebrations.

The Sports Council was formed in 1966 but has been holding its current awards night since 1990 and is looking to make it a special occasion.

The awards night takes place in the Windsor Suite, King George’s Hall on May 8 and organisers are hoping to get some of the borough’s sporting stars to attend the event.

Categories for this years awards are:

Community Club of the Year

Coach of the Year n Team of the Year

School Team of the year for sport (primary /secondary)

Junior Sports Personality

Senior Sports Personality

Rising Star

Lifetime Achievement

Young Volunteer

Senior Voulnteer

Services to Disability Sports n Official of the Year The sports council also recognises those who have competed at international levels for the first time and these names can be sent as written nominations.

John Flannery, vice-chairman of the Sports Council said: “We have been holding these awards in this format for the last 25 years so we want to make it a bit of a special occasion after reaching such a landmark.

“We are trying to get some of our Olympic stars to come along and present awards on the evening but most importantly, we are hoping as many of our previous winners can make it on the night.

“We would love them to get in touch with us and make it a night to remember.

“But we are also throwing the doors open to the public to come along as well and make it a real celebration of local sport.”
