BLACKBURN Northern Men’s Hockey team don’t really do losing after winning the North West Division Four title with a 100 per cent record.

The all-conquering team are currently top of Division Three having lost just one game following promotion and, for the second successive season, they have reached the final of the Lancashire Cup.

But at the Grassroots Heroes Awards, they had to admit defeat after the snow got the better of them.

“I’m gutted we could not make it,” said club official and first team player, Samuel Knott. “We tried to set off but got stuck outside the club and had to abandon the car.”

No show aside, it certainly has been a season to remember for Northern who are on track for back-to-back promotions and another shot at county glory.

“I think we have taken ourselves by surprise a little bit this season,” he added. “We didn’t really know what to expect at the start of the season and what goals to set ourselves.

“But we have done really well and probably exceeded expectations.”

It’s a great story considering Northern were on the verge of folding just a few years ago as the first team plummeted from the Premier Division.

“It was very close,” admitted Knott. “But the club regrouped and to get an award like this is a great testimony to all the hard work that has gone on.”

The club used to be at the very top but then due to lack of players just dropped down the divisions. So it is great that we are starting to climb the league once again.”

Apart the one defeat, where we didn’t really show up, we have played really well.”

Despite recruiting Polish scoring star, Dawid Wieczorek, who has scored more than 20 goals this season, Knott insists the success is a real team effort.

“Dawid is a great player and played at Champions League level in Poland athough I am not too sure what standard that is. But we have the likes of Stuart and Michael Grant and Carl Sanderson and Rob Blackburn. All of them are team places and that has been the reason for our success.”

Knott has set his sights on a league and cup double this year but is not taking anything for granted.

“We are three points clear at the top with a game in hand but we know there is still a lot of hard work to do,” he said. “But the aim is to keep going and try and win another title.”

And should they continue that winning habit then there is no reason why they won’t achieve those goals.
