A YOUNG Blackburn gymnast has won the right to represent Lancashire in a competition.

Amy Shorrock, 10, finished second in a Red Rose contest last month in which the top four finishers would be chosen to compete for the county.

Amy’s mother, Karen, was bursting with pride and explained how her daughter became involved in gymnastics.

“She started off at a local club in Blackburn when she was four years old,” she said.

“From there she moved to a club in Darwen but they said that she would need to move to a club that enters regional competitions because they could see that Amy had tremendous potential, so she now goes to Garstang School of Gymnastics three times a week.

“My husband and I take it in turns to take Amy over to Garstang because it’s a bit of a long way for us but it’s what Amy enjoys doing so we’ve got to do it.”

Despite enjoying success at such an early age, Amy’s parents are refusing to put any pressure on their daughter and will let her decide how far she wants to go with gymnastics.

“She’s only 10 so we need to let her find her own path,” she said.

“If she carries on then that’s great but at the moment we don’t know because things can change as you get older.”

Amy will represent Lancashire on Sunday at Robin Park Arena and Sports Centre in Wigan.

n Burnley Gymnastics Club gymnasts, parents and guardians – your gymnastics block payment is now due for renewal for January.
