CLITHEROE and Blackburn Ladies fourth team travelled to second place Lancaster this week hoping to make light of a 14 point gap between the two teams.

Many would have expected this clash to be a whitewash, but the visitors put up a determined shown.

A great end to end game saw lots of positives for this mixed age side who had a club veteran, Fran Griffiths, available for selection. No game for the ladies third team meant that captain Gaye Preston also had the luxury of picking some players from the side above.

This resulted in lots of great efforts on goal and it was undoubtedly an open and even game. Clitheroe’s 14 year old keeper, Fateema Ahmed, had to make an outstanding triple save to keep high flying Lancaster at bay.

But in the last five minutes Lancaster’s increased pressure finally found a way through the Clitheroe stronghold and they grabbed a 1-0 win, but there were plenty of positives for Clitheroe and Blackburn to take away.
