ADEEB Zulfiqar goes by the nickname Golden Kid and it was a golden performance that earned him a place in the England Boxing Junior Novice Championship regional finals.

The 15-year-old from Blackburn and Darwen Police ABC booked his place in next week’s final after gaining revenge against Lee Gallimore – a fighter he lost to in a split decision back in September.

Adeeb, the only fighter from the club put forward for the championships by coach Yaqoob Hussain, took on the Stockport and Brinington ABC boxer at regional semi finals at the Salford Campus, Walkden Sixth Form College

In a cagey opening round, Adeeb tried to work out the tactics of his fast and clever opponent. But he soon found his range, picking off Gallimore with his impressive left, right combinations from different angles – edging the opening round with his better work rate.

The Stockport and Brinington ABC fighter came out all guns blazing in the second round but Adeeb kept his cool under pressure, using his quicker hand speed to keep himself out of trouble.

The third round followed a similar pattern but Adeeb stepped up a gear and picked off Gallimore again and again with two and three punch combinations.

At the end of the contest, the judges unanimously voted Adeeb as the winner.

“It was a classy display against a very dangerous opponent,” said coach Yaqoob. “He had narrowly lost to him before so knew what to expect and he was ready for Lee this time. Adeeb boxed really well and kept out of trouble and stepped it up when he needed to.

“He knows he will be stepping up another level now in the regional finals but he is looking forward to it and is ready to give it a go.”

Meanwhile, Yaqoob has recently returned from six-week training camp in Pakistan.

He was invited by the Pakistan Boxing Federation to help prepare the national team for the Asian Games in Inchon, South Korea.

Yaqoob had worked with the squad in the past, preparing them for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in August.

"I had a great time and should have accompanied the team to the Asian Games but unfortunately, my accreditation ran out."
