TOWNELEY Community Tennis Club held its inaugural finals day and it was a real family affair.

Father and sons, brothers and sisters and even twins were in action competing alongside and against each other at Queens Park.

The club, which was officially opened in April, held 11 juniors and senior finals with singles and doubles glory up for grabs.

The men's final was the first family showdown of the day with dad Paul Wheatcroft up against son James

And it was dad who won the bragging rights, winning in straight sets 6-3 - 6-3.

The Ladies final was an entertaining affair as Hannah Guy went up against Lynda Garaghty.

Guy proved to be the steadier of the two players throughout the final and ended up as a deserved winner.

The men's doubles final proved to a memorable occasion for club founder Iain Taylor who teamed up with his son Liam to beat another father and son pair Paul and James Wheatcroft.

The Taylors won the first set 6-2, only for the Wheatcrofts to hit back in impressive style, winning the second set 6-1.

But it was the Taylors who dominated the Championship Tie-Breaker winning it 10-4.

The ladies doubles final was another that went to a Championship Tie-Breaker and this time Garaghty avenged her defeat to Guy in the singles.

Garaghty teamed up with Victoria Baldocke to Guy and Catherine.Riley.

Garaghty and Baldocke were out of the blocks quickly, winning the first set 6-0 but Guy and Riley refused to lie down and came storming back to win the second set 6-4.

The Championship Tie-Break was a tight affair, but it was Garaghty & Baldocke who won it 10-6.

Wheatcroft Senior lifted his second title of the day when he teamed up with Lisa Pollard to win the mixed doubles final.

The first set was a well contested affair with Wheatcroft and Pollard taking it 6-4, the second set was a little bit easier, wrapping up victory and the title 6-4, 6-2.

The junior boys final proved to be the match of the day with Marley Byrne just edging a 7-5, 7-6 win against Wheatcroft Junior.

But Wheatcroft must be shaking his head as to how he did not win this match.

Throughout both sets, Wheatcroft was well and truly in the driving seat but he could not take advantage, but a lot of credit must also go to the eventual winner Marley.Byrne who kept sticking at it to win the final in straight sets, 7-5 - 7-6.
