KAREN Driver produced a record breaking, medal winning performance at the recent ASA National Masters and Senior Age Group Championships in Sheffield.

The Colne ACS swimmer and club-mate Phillip Croxall where among 1,200 competitors who took part in the annual event at the Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.

And Driver, competing in the 40 to 44 year age group category, returned as a double champion and a European record holder.

The Colne swimmer was part of the Sub 160 Masters team that took part in the 800m freestyle relay. And Driver - along with Nicola Latty from Oundle, Jessica Wooddisse from Gloucester and former GB swimmer Sarah Collins - blew their rivals out of the water, lowering the European record by 21 seconds and coming within 15 seconds of the world record in the 160-199yr age group with a combined time of 9mins 12.35secs.

Driver, who is also a member of Pioner 79, also won the 1500m freestyle in her age group with a time of 19mins 29.01secs. Over the course of the three day event, she picked up second place finishes in the 400m freestyle (4mins 59.95secs) and 800m freestyle (10mins 15.04secs).

The one downside was finishing a disappointing eighth in the 200m freestyle in a time of 2mins 26.15secs.

While Croxall, competing in the 45 to 49 year category, did not finish among the medals, he did produce one of best 100m breaststoke performances, finishing in sxith place in a time of 1min 19.21secs - his first sub 1min 20secs in three years.

He also finished in fifth place in the 200m breaststroke in a time of 2mins 55.96secs and was 10th in individual medley in 1min 12.75secs.

Croxall finished with an eighth place in the 50m breastroke (35.52secs) and was also eighth in the 200m individual medely in 2mins 41.59secs.
