NINE young members of Pioneer 79 Swimming Club added running and riding to their repertoire when they took part in the Fleetwood Triathlon.

And they showed they are just as good in the saddle and on the road as they are in the pool after a string of impressive results.

The races were divided in to seperate categories with different distances for each category.

Holly Peters and Ryan Armstrong both took part in the TS section for eight-year-olds which included a 50m swim, 1500m bike ride and 600m run.

Holly impresses in the pool where she was second fastest and dropped down to third after the bike ride.

However, an impressive run saw her take second place overall.

Ryan finished an impressive eighth place overall in only his second triathlon after he was sixth out of the pool and then dropped to seventh after the ride, missing out on seventh spot oveall by four seconds.

Lucy Brady and Harry Robinson took part in the T1 race for nine to 10-year-olds. They swam 1500m, rode 4km and ran 1.2km.

Lucy climbed out of the pool in fourth place and despite slipping to eighth after the ride, an excellent run saw her finish in fourth place overall.

Harry produced a wonderful swim, finishing 19 seconds ahead of his nearest rival however problems with his transition – which included putting his T-shirt on back to front – saw him slip to fourth place after the bike ride.

But he made up for the disappointment with a gritty run that saw him finish in second place overall.

The T2 category saw competitors aged 11 to 12 years test themselves in a 200m swim, 6km ride and 1.8km run.

Jacob Waddington, Charlotte Collin, Caitlin Armstrong and Sophie Thomson were all flying the flag for Pioneer in this event.

In the boy’s race, Jacob Waddington produced strong swim and ride but was forced to retire on the run due to an ongoing injury. The girls event proved to be an intriguing race within a race with the three Pioneers going head to head.

And it was Charlotte who earned the club bragging rights thanks largely to ‘the run of her life’.

Caitlin was actually the quicker of the three in the pool climbing out in first place with Charlotte third and Sophie ninth.

After the ride, Caitlin was third with Charlotte dropping a few places with Sophie up to seventh.

But it was in the run that Charlotte, who has recently joined a running club, surged ahead of her team-mates to finish in second place overall with Charlotte seventh and Sophie eighth.

Finally, Eleanor Collin finished in fourth place overall in the T3 class which was for 13 and 14-year-olds.

Eleanor climbed out of the pool 30 seconds clear after her 300m swim but the riders chased her down over the 8km bike ride and eventually had to settle for fourth oveall after the 2.4km run n Jozef Gordon, 11, finished in ninth place in the North West Junior Triathlon Series which was held in Blackpool.
