Accrington Ladies progressed to the third qualifing round of the Women’s FA Cup following an an exciting 5-3 win against Wetherby Athletic.

Wetherby started strongly and for the opening 10 minutes pinned Accrington back in their own half.

However it was Accrington who struck first when Leah Embley turned home a right wing cross from Beck Holt-McEwan.

That lead was doubled within two minutes when Embley repaid the compliment with a lovely deft chip over the keeper for Becky Holt-McEwan to head home from close range.

Embley was again the provider in the 16th minute from a corner which allowed Holt-McEwan to grab her second goal of the game. But Wetherby struck back two minutes later with a superbly struck free kick curled into the far top corner.

Accrington continued to dominate and were rewarded in the 28th minute with their fourth goal as Lauren Walker released Embley to score her second.

In an end to end game, Wetherby again pulled a goal back and Accrington led 4-2 at the break.

The home side soon regained their three-goal cushion after the restart when Walker beat the offside trap to race onto a Sarah Darcy pass and chip the ball over the advancing keeper.

There was a nervy finale when Wetherby once again reduced the deficit however Accrington kept their visitors at to ensure they progress into the next round.
