Lancashire Spinners Division Four team which is based at Blackburn College, took to the road for their season opener on Sunday where they came up against Myerscough Giants.
This was always going to be a tough away game against the Manchester Giants Academy team, who boasted some of the best young basketball talent the country has to offer and the Giants held a seven point advantage after the first quarter.
Going into the second quarter Spinners really struggled to deal with Myerscough size and athleticism, where only Graham and Hodkin managed to get on the scorsheet, and again Myerscough using their pace to keep out scoring Spinners on the break. After a good team talk at half time and a few tactical adjustments made, Spinners came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and began to take the game to Myerscough.
Ngara got to the basket several times and Stephen Graham and Angelo Kornecki started hitting shots, while led by point guard Chris Hodkin.
The Spinners stepped up a gear on defence, again with Duxbury supplying the muscle rebounding at both ends strong and aggressively as the Spinners chipped away at the Giants lead.
The fourth quarter quickly became a non-entity, Myerscough realised that Spinners were tiring quickly and hit several buckets in transition and forcing their visitors into several turnovers. It soon became apparent that Spinners were not going to catch Myerscough, but never let their heads drop and continued to fight to the very end.
