Blackburn 39 Workington 3

IN-FORM Blackburn clocked up their seventh win on the bounce, but their play-off fate is no longer in their own hands.

‘Burn host Aspatria next weekend, but a home win for Bolton on the same day would secure their Lancashire rivals the final play-off berth.

“We’ve just got to go out and try and win our game and hope Bolton slip up,” said a Blackburn spokesman.

Blackburn are really in the groove, though, and having run in ten tries against Whitehaven seven days earlier, they showed no mercy to already relegated Workington in the Cumbrian mud and rain.

Richard Maudsley was on the mark early on, and receiving the ball two metres out, he beat his man to touch down in style.

Although Sam Morgan was unable to kick the conversion, he made amends shortly afterwards, adding three points with a well struck penalty kick.

Blackburn’s second try arrived on the half hour, Owen McDermott popping a pass to Matt Hughes, who scored by the post.

Morgan added the extra points, to ease the visitors into a 15-0 lead, before Workington kicked a penalty goal - and their only points of the game - on the stroke of half time.

The second period was all one way traffic though as Blackburn racked up the points.

Despite the home side having a numerical advantage following Chris Lowden’s yellow card, Black burn stamped their authority further on the contest, with Sean Hall squeezing in to touch down after some fine work by Rob Melling, Jack Campbell and Josh Thundercliffe.

Morgan's trusty boot kicked the conversion to extend their lead to 22-3.

The points were coming thick and fast now and Lee Acton then crashed through the defence, his pass setting up Maudsley for his second try.

Morgan missed the conversion, but he made amends shortly afterwards.

Breaking into the Workington 22, he fed Thundercliffe who dummied his man to score. This time Morgan kicked the two extra points, taking the score to 34-3.

With Workington having a a man sent to the sin bin in the closing five minutes, Blackburn landed their sixth try of the match.

Flying doctor Tom Marland, making his final appearance for the club, fittingly began the move, supplying Sean Hall.

Hall found substitute Adam Wrigley, who scored with his first touch of the game, going low into the corner to score and secure a comfortable win and collect the full five points.
