Young's bright start on links

NEW Lancahsire champion Mark Young is looking on course to make the cut at the St Andrews Links Trophy after an encouraging two-over par 73 opening round.

The 30-year-old is in Scotland just one week after clinching the county championship in dramatic style at Preston, and after helping steer Lancashire to English County Championship finals.

With confidence high, Young, of Hurst Green, made a bright start at St Andrews with a level par opening nine.

He dropped two shots on the backward nine but still remains in a good position to make the final two rounds of the 72-hole competition that includes many of the top amateur golfers from Britain and across the world.

The Longridge golfer begins his second round today at 1.40pm alongside Rhys Pugh of Vale of Glamorgan and McDonald’s Adam Dunton.

Young’s Lancashire team-mate Paul Kinnear, of Formby, enjoyed an exceptional opening round by shooting a two-under-par 69.

The best round of the day fell to Dutchman Daan Huizing, who went round the legendary course with 65.
