Nutter to savour big victory at Wilpshire Trophy

BARROWFORD ace Daniel Nutter claimed his first ever Wilpshire Trophy victory at the weekend and insisted: ‘It means a lot to me’.

On a day of low scoring, the 32-year-old Clitheroe member came out on top to win the prestigious event – part of the Mitsushiba Northern Order of Merit – by two shots.

The top eight players all equalled or beat par, with one handicapper Nutter leading the way with 67 and 66 for a five-under-par aggregate.

The three-times Harold Ryden Trophy runner-up rolled in three birdies in four holes from the 12th in the first round then added two more in each loop in the next.

Beating Hart Common’s Ken Hudson and Craig Cuthbert of Prestwich into second place, Nutter said: “It’s fantastic to win the Wilpshire Trophy. It really means a lot to me.

“It’s one of the best events in the area – certainly one of the top competitions in the Northern Order of Merit.

“It’s a strong field, but the best thing is the organisation. It’s spot on in every way.

“Wilpshire Golf Club work hard to put on a good event – and it’s a terrific course to play on.”

Nutter added: “I feel I played well, very solid. There’s a lot of good golfers – like Jack Brooks, Mark Young and Michael Hunt – so to come out on top feels good.”

Among the other notable performers on Saturday include Wilpshire junior captain Sam Townend – son of professional Simon – who won the best nett scored with a second round of 66.

Townend finished the event joint ninth overall.
