JEFF Mathews embarks on his second campaign as secretary of the PGA in Lancashire with a busy schedule which tees off at Fishwick Hall today.

And he hopes to bolt on more fixtures as the season progresses.

“We are close to announcing the matchplay and strokeplay championship dates along with other competitions,” he said.

And one of the most important events is at Oak Royal Golf and Country Club, where he is professional.

“We are staging its inaugural pro-am on May 30 and the owner has persuaded Sandy Jones, the PGA chief executive to play in it. On top of that he will bring the Ryder Cup to put on show and has offered to present the prizes at the dinner.

“It’s one heck of a coup for the club that only been opened for less than six years. We are looking for 15 teams of four but that figure could increase.” The long running Bill Beaumont Charity Classic, at Hillside on July 4, also comes under the county administration and other pro-ams are at Darwen, Pleasington, Knott End and Ashton-in-Makerfield.
