DAVID JAMES - Became busier as the game wore on, but never looked like conceding - 7.

GLEN JOHNSON - Was kept busy defensively by Andraz Kirm, but proved a threat going forward - 7.

JOHN TERRY - Oozed confidence at the back, where he was rarely troubled and made a brilliant second-half block, and was denied a goal by a fine save from Samir Handanovic - 7.

MATTHEW UPSON - Improved after a nervous start and made a crucial late challenge, but not entirely convincing - 6.

ASHLEY COLE - Solid at the back and linked well with Steven Gerrard ahead of him, particularly after the break - 7.

GARETH BARRY - Looked off the pace at times and struggled with his distribution - 5.

JAMES MILNER - Recovered from a shocking start to influence the game repeatedly, in particular with the cross which led to the opening goal - 7.

FRANK LAMPARD - More involved in the middle of the park and provided a goal-threat once again - 7.

STEVEN GERRARD - Took on the responsibility of holding up the left side and performed his defensive duties well while working hard to find a supply line to the men ahead of him - 8.

WAYNE ROONEY - Put in a shift for his country and was unlucky not to score as Handanovic, a post and sheer bad luck kept him out - 7.

JERMAIN DEFOE - Worked tirelessly across the line to keep Slovenia stretched and took his goal superbly - 7.
