Netbusters, silky team efforts and individual brilliance – Blackburn Rovers’ 2011-12 ‘Goal of the Season’ award is sure to prove as difficult to choose as ever.
The club launched the competition (The Peter White Memorial Trophy) in conjunction with the Lancashire Telegraph, in memory of popular sports journalist and keen Roverite Peter White. The scorer of the best goal of the season receives the coveted trophy.
Junior Hoilett scooped the top prize last season with his screamer against West Brom at Ewood ... and the rising star has another couple of entries in this year’s competition.
Or will it be Ruben Rochina’s rocket against Fulham, Yakubu’s beauty in the win over Swansea or Morten Gamst Pedersen’s sublime free-kick at Arsenal – with a fine selection to pick from, the choice is all yours!
Anyone who gets the 1-2-3 in the order selected by the management will go in the hat to win a shirt signed by the eventual winner.
A. Ruben Rochina
11.09.11 After a quick attacking move, Junior Hoilett tees up Ruben Rochina, who takes a touch before rifling an unstoppable left-foot shot past Mark Schwarzer from the edge of the area.
B. Yakubu
17.09.11 After a sublime spin by Mauro Formica on the edge of the box, Junior Hoilett threads the ball through to Yakubu, who flicks a first-time shot past the on-rushing Wojciech Szczesny - his first goal for the club.
C. Junior Hoilett
29.10.11 Junior Hoilett cuts in from the left flank and skips past two Norwich defenders, before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top right-hand corner.
D. Ruben Rochina
26.11.11 Just moments after having penalty appeals waved away, Junior Hoilett plays the ball inside to Steven Nzonzi, who lays it off to Ruben Rochina and the Spaniard rifles a stunning shot past Thomas Sorensen.
E. Yakubu
03.12.11 Gael Givet finds Yakubu, who plays the ball back to the Frenchman, who breaks into the box before pulling it back for Yakubu to curl a glorious left-foot shot into the top corner.
F. Yakubu
31.12.11 Adam Henley takes a throw-in to Yakubu, who rides the challenge of Michael Carrick, skips past Phil Jones and fires through the legs of David de Gea.
G. Morten Gamst Pedersen
04.02.12 Following a foul by Laurent Koscielny on Anthony Modeste, Morten Gamst Pedersen sends a stunning free-kick around the wall and into the top corner of the net.
H. Steven Nzonzi
11.02.12 A quick break by Rovers sees Mauro Formica flick the ball on to Steven Nzonzi, who frees Junior Hoilett down the left. The young winger takes on Fitz Hall, before cutting the ball back to Nzonzi, who fires a crisp left-foot strike past Paddy Kenny.
I. David Dunn
03.03.12 Grant Hanley, Steven Nzonzi and Marcus Olsson combine, before Yakubu plays the ball inside to Junior Hoilett. His first-time lay-off is played wide by Nzonzi to Bradley Orr and his cross from the right is headed home by David Dunn at the far post. What a move!
J. Junior Hoilett
10.03.12 Yakubu breaks down the left, before cutting inside and feeding Junior Hoilett. The young Canadian skips past Jamie O’Hara onto his left foot and fires an unstoppable low shot into the bottom corner.
