Rovers boss Tony Mowbray says he won’t break up the spirit in the dressing room by splashing the cash on expensive signings.

Throughout the promotion winning campaign the players spoke of the tight nature of the dressing room and Mowbray believes that can work in Rovers’ favour in the Championship.

The Ewood Park chief wants to reward his promotion winners with new deals, as well as giving them a chance to prove themselves in the second tier.

That won’t stop him from making additions, but be admits they will have to be of the right character to fit in to the current set-up.

Of keeping the spirit of the squad together Mowbray said: “It’s extremely important.

“My first thought was to look after the players who have done so well for this football club and make sure they aren’t out of line with the new signings as they come in. The spirit is the most important thing.

“It’s important that I don’t cause friction in the dressing room by signing players on four times as much as the lads who all got the job done last year.

“Of course, you need a bit of class to win games or someone to keep heading corners away, but spirit is the most important thing.”

Mowbray knows recruitment will be key, just as it was last season as he built a squad capable of winning immediate promotion back to the Championship.

This time around it will be about getting a foothold in the second tier.

But keen to build on the foundations set, Mowbray told Rovers’ website: “We want to try and grow this football club from a really solid foundation and give it every chance.

“We have to do it bit by bit. There’s nothing saying that we can’t have a fantastic year next year, as Millwall and Sheffield United managed to do.

“I’m sure they didn’t break any banks. That’s what I would hope to do – to have a really positive season, play positive football, try to score goals, as we do, and make it exciting for the fans.

“We’ll be adding to the squad, hopefully we’ll bring in players that excite the fans. We want to be a competitive, attacking football team that can cause problems for other sides.

“Getting the recruitment right is key, and I’ve spoken a lot about that.”
