Jack Payne believes there is ‘more than enough’ in the Rovers dressing room to hold their own in the Championship.

Payne could still be a part of the Rovers squad next season, with the 23-year-old having enjoyed his five-month stay in East Lancashire.

Talks between Rovers and his parent club Huddersfield, who capped a memorable first season in the Premier League by staying up, are set to take place this summer.

He played 23 times for the Terriers in their promotion from the Championship in 2016/17 in his debut season with the club.

And having played at that level, he sees no reason why Rovers can’t use the momentum from their promotion to prosper next term.

“There is more than enough in this changing room to make a big name for themselves in the Championship,” Payne said.

“I have no doubt about that. There’s plenty of quality in the dressing room and there’s a reason we’ve got automatic promotion.

“I don’t see any reason why they can’t have a positive season in the Championship.”

Payne signed off his loan spell at Ewood Park with a goal against Oxford United, his first for Rovers and against his former club.

The playmaker had spent the first half of the season with the U’s, scoring seven times and having eight assists.

He has a year left on the three-year contract he signed when joining Huddersfield from Southend and helped Rovers to promotion in his 18 appearances.

They lost just once during those matches, that being the 1-0 defeat at Charlton on April 28, and Payne says the dressing room camaraderie at Rovers is something he particularly enjoyed.

“It’s been an enjoyable season,” he said, reflecting on the 2017/18 campaign.

“I started at Oxford and then moved to Blackburn with the view of getting promoted and we’ve done that so I’m chuffed to bits.

“I’m really pleased with the season.

“To be part of a squad which has barely lost since I’ve been here, we’ve been used to winning and it’s great to be part of.

“The changing room is buzzing so on a personal note it’s been really enjoyable and finishing with promotion is all that I could want.”

A key part of Rovers’ success this season has been re-engaging with a fanbase who have endured plenty of low points in recent years.

But an aggregate of over 43,000 fans have made journeys up and down the country in support of their team, while 27,600 packed in to Ewood for the final game of the season against Oxford.

It has something that has really struck a chord with Payne who was pleased that Rovers could reward them with promotion.

He added: “The game at Doncaster was really enjoyable.

“Wimbledon on a Tuesday night, it was fantastic for them to travel all the way there.

“After the game, travelling back, it was a great showing and it’s great for us that we feel we’re giving them the performances they deserve.

“It’s been all round a really good season.”
