It must have been a sickener for the Rovers fans who travelled all that way to Gillingham on Saturday, only for the game to be called off at 11:30am, writes Simon Garner.

You have to feel for the fans and you would hope that something could be done to compensate those that travelled.

Clubs have to look after their fans, and hopefully it will be looked at.

Gillingham will have made the decision based on health and safety and police advice but you have to think that it could have been made earlier.

I can’t remember as a player ever travelling such a long distance only for the game to be called off.

The postponement, coupled with the wins for Shrewsbury on Saturday and Wigan last week, means Rovers’ position at the top is not quite as comfortable and they will certainly be aware of the two teams behind them.

You would always prefer points on the board but when teams win their games in hand it can bring pressure.

But Rovers can’t worry about anyone else, no matter what the results elsewhere.

All they can do is focus on themselves, even in a week where they don’t have a league fixture and both Wigan and Shrewsbury play twice.

They can’t affect the other two and must try and win each game they can to amass as many points as possible.

If Rovers win all of their remaining games then I’m sure they will get promoted. That has to be the focus.

While it was disappointing for the Gillingham game to be called off, hopefully it can give the players chance to rest up, shake off any niggles they might have, and come back refreshed for the final stage of the season.

Tony Mowbray said last week that he is not obsessing himself with the results of Rovers’ promotion rivals.

That is the best way to be.

You can only concentrate on your team and you don’t want to lose sight of that.

I’m sure that when he sits in his office he looks at who each team is playing every week but beyond that he will be focussed on setting his team up for each match.

Rovers now are in the middle of an enforced break from action and it is great to see five players called up for their country, particularly Darragh Lenihan who has come through the system and earned his first Republic of Ireland call-up.

It is very good for the club and shows they are heading in the right direction.

The nations they have been called up for are well ranked, and it will be a proud moment for all of the players to represent their country.

It is the pinnacle of any footballer’s career and they won’t want to miss out on the opportunity.

Rovers will be desperate that they come back without injury though.

They are coming to the end of a long, hard season and with a promotion push to fight for, they are on a roll, and they won’t want to be without any players at this stage.
