ROVERS have switched to a back three in each of their last two matches, but boss Tony Mowbray isn’t one to get overly caught up in talks of systems and formations.

He made the move at half-time in the game with Oldham as Rovers battled back from 2-0 down to earn a point.

And following the injury to Ryan Nyambe, Mowbray opted for a back three, sending on Darragh Lenihan and Lewis Travis, with Elliott Bennett moving to a wing-back role.

It was Lenihan’s first outing since the opening day after six months out with a fractured metatarsal and the switch gave Rovers control of the game as they continually recycled possession quickly.

And Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I needed Darragh on the pitch, I could have played him at right-back in a straight swap.

“But I saw an opportunity to get Darragh going because he’s a big player for our football club.

“We changed to a three in the last game (against Oldham) so I knew there was no fears about that, it’s not as if we’d not played it before and the players wouldn’t know what their responsibilities are.

“It felt the right thing to do, whether it helped, I don’t know but we got the job done.

“Sometimes you make changes and they work, sometimes they don’t and if they don’t then you get criticised but if they do work then that’s good.

“We’re happy that we got the result regardless of what formation or shaped we played.

“It was great that Darragh Lenihan came back, he’s been out since the opening day at Southend.

“He’s worked hard to get back and delighted that he was able to show his power and his strength and he will only strengthen us as we move forward.”
