CHARLIE Mulgrew credits the whole team for Rovers’ defensive record with no team in the EFL having conceded fewer goals on their travels so far this season.

Rovers will be looking to maintain that record at Bury this weekend with just four goals against in their seven away league outings so far this season.

Manchester City and Tottenham have conceded fewer than Rovers’ four, but from two more matches, with Mulgrew quick to share the credit around.

He and Paul Downing have struck up a good partnership in the six games they have started together since the latter arrived at the club from MK Dons on loan.

Downing’s run of five consecutive clean sheets was ended by Fleetwood in Rovers’ last league outing on October 31 where they were uncharacteristically poor at the back.

But having been without Darragh Lenihan for all but one of their 15 league games, Mulgrew is pleased with what he’s seen from Rovers as a defensive unit.

He said: “We defend and attack as a team.

“We feed the ball into the attackers to score the goals and they help us when we’re defending.

“It’s a team effort and we’re all pushing for the same thing.”

Downing and Mulgrew are expected to continue their partnership in the heart of the Rovers back four when they make the trip to Bury on Saturday.

That has been the partnership for five of Rovers’ last seven league games as they continue to be without the services of Lenihan who is set to be sidelined for the remainder of the calendar year.

And Mulgrew said: “Paul is a good player and he has settled in well.

“The manager has obviously had him before at West Brom and he has shown good qualities.

“We have picked up a few clean sheets as well but the whole team takes credit for that.

“He is a good centre half and one who is good to play with.”

Only seven teams from the top half of League One going in to last weekend were in action because of the international break.

Scunthorpe were the only team to win, but a point for Rotherham United saw Rovers drop to seventh and out of the play-off places.

But the Rovers skipper added: “Right now we are not looking at the table, we are looking to go on a run and then once we have played the Christmas and New Year period then we will go from there.”
