THE EFL is to meet with its 72 members in September to discuss the possibility of bringing forward the closing date of the summer transfer window.

The EFL board announced today that it will explore the possibility of a new summer window, which would close before the opening day of next season.

It comes a day after it was announced that Premier League clubs are to discuss a similar proposal

While a rule change at Premier League level requires a two-thirds majority approval, EFL regulations require a simple majority of those who cast a vote, as well as a majority within the Championship.

An EFL statement read: “The EFL Board and its clubs have previously expressed the opinion that closing the summer transfer window in advance of the season commencing would be an improvement on the current position.

“On this basis we will be tabling the matter for discussion with clubs in September.

“It will be important that all the consequences of such a decision are fully considered, as the requirements of our clubs are different to those in Europe’s top flight leagues.”

The current transfer window will close on August 31, 26 days after EFL clubs kicked off their new season.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray has previously spoken of why he would prefer to see the window close before the season gets underway.

“I think the window should have shut before the season kicked off,” he said.

“It is a bit of a circus for two or three weeks and it’s almost as if the games are inconsequential.

“Every day it’s driven by who’s moving where, every press conference you’re asked about it, so the best thing would be to have your team in place before the season kicks off.

“Then everyone knows and we just get on with it.

“Here we are still a bit short of players but then if we had been forced to have finished all our signings then I’m sure we would have done it, as everyone else would have done.”
