ROVERS boss Tony Mowbray says it’s not a case of ripping up his plans and starting again as he analyses what has gone wrong in their opening two games.

Mowbray saw his side go down 2-1 at Southend United on the opening day before Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at home Doncaster Rovers.

Rovers made errors in the lead up to each of Doncaster’s three second half goals and Mowbray admits the balance between attack and defence hasn’t been struck in the opening weeks.

“I think we need to analyse and see what’s working and what’s not,” Mowbray said.

“We wanted to get off to a good start, we haven’t, but it’s not a situation where we get overly concerned.

“We are disappointed for the supporters who came with an expectation but I am confident that this group will win a lot of matches this year because of the talent I see every day on the training pitch, we just need to find the right balance.

“I can sit here and talk about personnel, but if we are going to play expansively then we need to do our jobs defensively.

“It’s about bringing it all together. It’s just about getting the balance right and in the first two games we have not got it right.

“When we find that formula I’m sure we’ll be okay.”

Rovers have made nine summer signings so far, seven on permanent deals, as well as Harry Chapman and Marcus Antonsson on season-long loans.

Mowbray will hope to make that 10 this week with Celtic midfielder Liam Henderson under consideration.

The transfer window remains open until August 31, and when asked about whether more deals are likely, Mowbray added: “I hope so.

“The transfer window is never easy, you are asking questions and just waiting on answers.

“Then we will look forward to September 1, it all settling down, and getting to know what your squad is.

“I sit  here frustrated and disappointed, but still excited by the group of players that we’ve got and we have to find the right formula and balance that’s going to give us the best chance of winning games.”

Richie Smallwood, Corry Evans and Peter Whittingham all started the game against Doncaster, with Mowbray still looking to bring in one more senior midfielder.

“At first-team level at this moment I see Whittingham, Smallwood and Evans,” he said.

“Willem (Tomlinson) still has a bit to do to understand what it takes to be a top footballer.

“I think we need competition in that area of the field, yet it does give you headaches.”

Mowbray admits trying to do business in the transfer market, as well as preparing the team for seven games in the opening month of the season, can be difficult.

Like many managers, he would prefer all deals to be done before the season starts, adding: “It eats in to a bit of energy of the team.

“You work with a team and you almost buy in to those that are playing and they get to believe that’s their position and then two weeks later you bring someone in who’s bang in their position.

“It can break trust and relationships sometimes.

“That’s why I would prefer to have it done before the season starts.

“Footballers are not stupid, they can see that if we have four central midfield players and we only play two they have to compete to get in to the team.

“It takes a lot of time to settle down and before you know it you’re in to the middle of September and October and you’re still trying to settle your squad down.”
