TONY Mowbray was pleased to see Rovers record another pre-season win at Morecambe, but felt his side could have scored more than the two they did.

Rovers were 2-0 up just after the half hour mark following goals from Danny Graham, his third of pre-season, and Elliott Bennett.

Morecambe’s trialist goalkeeper made a string of impressive saves in either half to thwart Rovers who were pegged back seven minutes before the break when Rhys Turner found the bottom corner with a long range effort.

The second half was goal-less, not for a lack of chances created by the visitors, and Mowbray said: “It was another good work-out for us.

“The frustration for us if any was that we weren’t able to score more goals.  We had the chances but didn’t take them.

“They were a good test for us, a step up from the last opposition and that’s what we’re trying to do.

“I felt there were really good spells and others where we didn’t move it as well as we could.

“The stuff around the box I don’t want to over play but it’s pre-season and they are trying to do what we practice, just sometimes at the wrong times.”

Graham put Rovers 1-0 up in the 10th minute with a close range finish, and he completed an hour for the first time of the close season.

And Mowbray added: “It was good for Danny to get so long on the pitch – he’s working ever so hard and it was great for him to score a goal.

“Hopefully we will see his name on the scoresheet a lot this season.”

Ryan Nyambe, Craig Conway and Scott Wharton missed the game with slight niggles picked up in training, while Corry Evans was brought off in the closing stages after taking a knock to the ankle.

However, Mowbray was able to hand 90 minutes to all of his starting back four, while Elliott Bennett also completed his second full game of pre-season.

And Mowbray saw pleasing signs from his side as the season opener at Southend United on August 5 draws nearer.

He added: “Smallwood was a Trojan out there again, Peter (Whittingham) keeps the ball moving for us and we have to add the goals which last time at York we did.

“We got off to a good start but didn’t take the chances that came our way.

“Hopefully those will continue to come and we can take them.

“We are getting there, there’s still a way to go but the lads are taking on board what we’re asking of them.

“We have to win football matches, I said to them that we had to play our game and impose our games on them.

“It was good to score an early goal but a bit of poor finishing, good goalkeeping, meant we weren’t able to add to that.  But we were creating the opportunities which is the most important thing.”
