TONY Mowbray admits he is looking to strengthen all areas of the Blackburn Rovers squad this summer.

The Rovers head coach is targeting around eight signings in all, with his summer business so far being exclusively reserved for midfielders.

Peter Whittingham and Richie Smallwood were the first two through the Ewood Park doors, followed this week by attacking midfielders Bradley Dack and Ben Gladwin who joined for £750,000 and an undisclosed fee from Gillingham and QPR respectively.

The midfield was in need of strengthening following the release of central midfielders Jason Lowe, Hope Akpan and Danny Guthrie post relegation.

Rovers will also look to strengthen in defence, with right-back Tony McMahon a target.

The 31-year-old, who worked with Mowbray during their time together at Middlesbrough between 2010 and 2013, would be a free signing as his contract with League One rivals Bradford City expires this summer.

But it is in attack that Mowbray acknowledges Rovers will need to add players, with Danny Graham and Anthony Stokes the only senior strikers on the club’s books following the departures of loan trio Marvin Emnes, Lucas Joao and Sam Gallagher.

“I am concentrating on all departments,” he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“I’m looking at the front end of the pitch as well because you need to score 70 or 80 goals if you are going to be at the top end of the league.

“We are pleased to have got some over the line and hopefully we can add some more as we move forward.

“Then hopefully we will have enough players in our squad that can make sure that we do score the 70 or 80 goals that is required to be at the top end of the table.”
