GEMMA Donnelly admits tomorrow’s Women’s Premier League play-off final has been the culmination of three years of hard work.

Rovers won the Northern Premier League title and face southern division champions Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow (2pm) in a bid to be promoted to Women’s Super League 2.

Donnelly’s side went the whole league season unbeaten, but face a Spurs side who knocked them out of the FA Cup at the third round stage.

The Ewood boss admits preparations have gone well and the whole squad are looking forward to finish a fine season with a flourish.

“We have been building towards this for the last three seasons,” she said of the final which will take place at Charlton Athletic’s The Valley stadium

“This is my third full season in charge, I took over four years ago and we just about survived relegation having lost a lot of players after opting against going in to the Super League.

“So this really has been three years in the making, and it has taken some real hard work from everyone to get in to this position.

“We have done as much as we needed to do, and more, and I feel very confident going in to the game.

“The girls are so up for this.”

Rovers Ladies dropped just six points on the way to lifting the northern title, finishing 11 points clear of closest rivals Middlesbrough. The winners of the play-offs will be crowned overall champions of the Women’s Premier League, and, subject to meeting licence criteria, will be promoted to FA Women’s Super League 2.

And Donnelly added: “The preparations have gone well – everyone is super excited about the weekend.

“We have prepared as much, and as well, as we possibly can going in to the game. We have prepared physically and mentally.

“We will head down on Saturday, it’s a long journey, so we’re hoping to have a day where we’re not thinking about football, where we can switch off and then focus on the game on the Sunday.”

Donnelly has a fully-fit squad to choose from with Rovers taking a full quota of 16 players to the final.

They wrapped up the league title in March, with their place in the play-off final assured as early as March 26.

However, they remained unbeaten in their following five league games to end the league season unbeaten, as well as claiming the Lancashire Senior Cup crown in April after a 1-0 win against AFC Fylde.

And having been assured of their place in the final for so long, Donnelly says the team deserve great credit for finishing the job they started by going the whole season without defeat.

And she hopes they can find one final result, and performance, to seal promotion.

She added: “Spurs are a very good team, you don’t pick up the results they have all season through luck.

“Having played them before in the FA Cup, we have been privy to what they offer, and I am expecting an even game.

“There is so much pressure on both teams, I think it will be down to who can cope with the pressure the best, which team performs on the day and puts the ball in the back of the net.

“It might come down to a little bit of luck and it will be an evenly contested game.

“The performances that we have put in this season, over the past eight months or so, we have been the most consistent side in any of the divisions.

“We have been really resilient and found a way to win at times.”
