GEMMA Donnelly was delighted to see her side finally get their hands on the Women’s Northern Premier League title as they ended the season unbeaten following a 2-2 draw against Stoke City.

Rovers Ladies won 17 of their 20 league games and they wrapped up the title with six games of the campaign left to play.

They were finally presented with the trophy on Sunday after the draw against Stoke - their second silverware of the season after lifting the Lancashire County Cup last month.

The Ladies now have a little under two weeks to prepare for their play-off final against southern league winners Tottenham Hotspur, with the winner booking themselves a spot in WSL 2 should they meet the relevant criteria.

And after lifting the trophy, Donnelly said: “It was great to finish off at Ewood Park and maintain our unbeaten run and I’m super pleased with the girls.

“I was a little bit disappointed with our performance but fair play to Stoke for coming to spoil the party.

“But I think I can afford the girls some time to absorb what they have achieved this season and we are delighted to be officially crowned champions, it was nice to receive the trophy at last.”

Rovers fell behind against the Potters, when Ashley Hayes latched on to a loose ball in the box and found the top corner in the 18th minute.

But the hosts were level 10 minutes later when top scorer Saffron Jordan crossed for Faye McCoy to volley home.

Ella Toone then took centre stage three minutes later as she curled a terrific effort in to the top corner to complete Rovers’ turnaround.

After the interval, Toone found space in the box again but dragged her shot wide before Jordan had an effort saved after going through one-on-one.

And despite Rovers’ dominance, Stoke equalised in the last minute through Rachel Ball.

Rovers still found time to go close but Toone was adjudged to have strayed offside in turning home an Alex Taylor cross.
