CHARLIE Mulgrew admits relegation to League One with Blackburn Rovers is a career low point.

Mulgrew scored a stunning 25-yard free-kick in Rovers’ win at Brentford on Sunday, but it couldn’t save the club from relegation to the third tier.

The Scot has enjoyed plenty of success in his career, playing in the Champions League with Celtic and winning 26 caps for his country.

But the 31-year-old admits relegation from the Championship with Rovers was a real low point for him.

“Devastation – everyone is gutted,” he said of how the dressing room felt after Sunday’s relegation.

“We’re devastated, it’s hard to speak, everyone was gutted and down, it’s easier said than done but we have to pick ourselves up.

“We need to bounce back and that’s all we can do.

“It’s probably the biggest low of my career – the worst feeling yet.”

Rovers were relegated despite winning their last two games, against Aston Villa and Brentford.

That helped them to a total of 11 points from their final five fixtures, but an inferior goal difference proved to be their undoing as Nottingham Forest and Birmingham City won their final day matches to stay up.

Despite the improved form under Tony Mowbray, Mulgrew admits it was the first half of the season which cost Rovers.

“We thought if we won our last two games then we would have a right chance and that’s what we did, but it wasn’t enough.

“But the season is about 46 games and overall it wasn’t enough,” he told the club’s official website.

“Even if we had stayed up we would have known that big improvements were needed.”

Rovers were winless in their opening seven games of the season, and also dropped 11 points in the final four minutes of matches across the campaign, something which Mulgrew admits played a big part in their demise.

He added: “You can point at a lot of games, you could go right back through the season and I’m sure we’ll all be thinking about that in the coming days, where we could have done better as players and as a team.

“There are games we will look back on, particularly in the first half of the season when we could have won games but didn’t.”
