BLACKBURN Rovers Ladies will look to add another piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet when they face AFC Fylde in the Lancashire County Cup final tonight (7.30pm).

Rovers have already lifted the Women’s Premier League Northern title and will contest a promotion play-off final against Southern Division winners Tottenham Ladies next month, but first up is this evening’s County Cup clash at the County Ground in Leyland, Rovers’ first fixture since their win at Derby on April 9.

Rovers boss Gemma Donnelly told the Lancashire Telegraph: “We have had a bit of a break but there is no better way to get back to it than playing in a County Cup final.

“The County Cup is a competition that we really enjoy being part of and have been so successful in.

“Along the way we get to play against a whole host of different opposition so it’s good to see what else is out there.

“Obviously we consider Fylde, formerly Preston, as rivals and it is a good occasion to meet them in the final.

“I couldn’t tell you how many times we have won it, and we don’t take it for granted, but it’s been a great competition for us and we almost feel as though the trophy belongs to us with how many times we have won it.

“The girls look forward to it, we make an occasion of it, and I know that they will be up for it as they will be for the remaining games of the season.

“We want to remain unbeaten in the league and also retain the County Cup.”

The two sides have met twice already this season, with Rovers edging the two league games. The first was a 2-1 away win in October, followed by a 1-0 success in February.

And Donnelly added: “I would suggest that the first one was the tighter of the two.

“The first game was when Fylde were enjoying an unbeaten run and were considered as one of the favourites to win the league.

“Given the transition from Preston to Fylde there have been a lot of changes in personnel and I think the transitional period has meant that I don’t think the season has quite gone to plan for them.

“The second game was 1-0 but that was not quite a reflection of the type of game it was.”

Donnelly also hopes Rovers can return to action fresh from their break in fixtures.

She added: “We had such a busy run of games up to winning the league that to be fair the girls probably needed that bit of a break to recharge the batteries, gather focus and work on the training field.

“They have enjoyed a bit of down time.

“It has also allowed us to deal with any niggles because it has been pretty intense for a lot of the season so it has been something of a welcome break.”

Rovers round off their league season with home games against Huddersfield (May 7) and Stoke City (May 14) before facing Spurs in the play-off match at The Valley on Saturday, May 27.
