TONY Mowbray is hoping to transfer the pressure on to Rovers’ relegation rivals by making it back-to-back away wins when they travel to Wolves this afternoon.

Rovers head to Molineux knowing that a second away victory in the space of eight days will move them out of the bottom three, for tonight at least.

Victory in the West Midlands would see Rovers overhaul Birmingham ahead of their clash with Aston Villa in tomorrow’s derby.

Rovers have spent just nine games outside the bottom three so far this season, and Mowbray knows the psychological advantage of climbing out of the dropzone.

He said: “To get three points would be a big boost but then it doesn’t guarantee anything. We have to make life as difficult as possible for the teams above us.

“By getting three points in the next game that would make it difficult for them because they are going to have to not drop in to the bottom spots.

“Would it then reverse the pressure with them knowing that they have to win the next game?

“We then could go in to the game against Villa looking to win but at 1-1 do we push everyone forward?

“It’s a psychological thing, when you get down to these last few weeks there are generally people in your ear telling you what’s going on but let’s wait and see.

“Our target is to get nine points from these last three games and I think if we did then it would give us a pretty good chance of not going down.”

Mowbray admits he is unlikely to watch Birmingham’s clash with Aston Villa tomorrow (12noon), whatever Rovers’ result at Wolves.

The Blues won just two of Gianfranco Zola’s 24 games in charge before he resigned from his position after the Easter Monday defeat to Burton Albion.

Rovers have closed the gap to Birmingham to three points after their four point haul over Easter, which included a first win on the road since November at Nottingham Forest.

And Mowbray’s men will be aiming to build on that when they travel to Molineux.

He added: “The group are looking forward to this game, especially on the back of an away victory, and sometimes they come in little cycles where you go a few games on a run and let’s see if Forest kick-started a good little run away from home for us.

“We were disappointed after Bristol City and putting in a really solid, hardworking and honest performance in at Forest.

“We are in the mix - it is important that other teams feel the pressure knowing that we are only one result away from putting them in the bottom three but with games running out we need to do that quickly.

“The first opportunity to do that is at Wolves and we will go there in a positive mindset.”
