ROVERS midfielder Danny Guthrie is predicting a bright future for the club under Tony Mowbray - and he wants to be a part of it.

But Guthrie - whose contract expires at the end of the season - admits his focus is on the remaining eight games, rather than his future, as Rovers look to move out of the Championship relegation zone.

The 29-year-old moved to Ewood Park in the summer of 2015 on a two-year deal and his current nine game starting streak is his longest since joining the club.

“Next season I’m sure the gaffer will be keen to push on providing we stay up this year which we are more than capable of doing,” Guthrie said.

“The future does look bright, the gaffer has come in and made a difference to the team, but the most important thing is staying up.

“I would love to be a part of it next season, we’ll just have to wait and see.

“Obviously the most important thing at the minute is making sure we stay in this league and any thoughts of next season aren’t anyone’s focus at the minute.”

Rovers are without a game this weekend because of the international break, but return to action at Brighton next Saturday which will be the first of their remaining eight games.

The two-week break is the first real chance that Mowbray has had to work on the training ground with his side having seen Rovers play seven times in his first 24 days in charge.

Rovers are unbeaten in those seven games, but Guthrie feels they should have collected more than the 11 points they managed.

The midfielder added: “This week we’ve been working on some new stuff with the gaffer which is good, but it’s a bit of anti-climax not having that game at the weekend.

“We’re unbeaten since the gaffer has come in, we’re probably a bit disappointed not to have more wins.

“Against Preston I thought we were much the better team but didn’t see the game out which we have done a couple of times at home, but not on Saturday.

“We’re disappointed not to have won more games, but being seven games unbeaten is good for us.

“I think last Saturday (against Preston) was possibly our best performance with the ball since the gaffer came in and I think if we had come off with a 2-1 win then we would have been delighted and been out of the relegation zone.

“But there are a lot of games and points up for grabs.”

Rovers face trips to promotion-chasing Brighton and Reading in their next two matches, but Guthrie says Mowbray will have a plan for both, and believes his side can go in to them with confidence given their unbeaten run.

“The training for Brighton has started, but after the weekend, when everyone is back, that’s when we’ll really start preparing for the game,” he said.

“I think he (Mowbray) has made us solid and given us a foundation to play from and we set up depending on who we’re playing.

“Setting up against Fulham away was different to how we would against someone else, so the week leading up to the game is always interesting because the gaffer always has something different on how the game is going to go.”

“We’ve got some tough away games coming up but we can take confidence from the last two.

“We went to Norwich and Fulham and earned two good points so we’re full of confidence.”
