SAM Gallagher says Blackburn Rovers need to go for the jugular when they take the lead after seeing his brilliant volley cancelled out late on against Wolves.

The striker smashed home a 13th-minute thunderbolt to hand Owen Coyle’s men the advantage over their fellow strugglers.

But Dave Edwards capped a spell of pressure from the visitors by heading in a controversial leveller 12 minutes from time to leave Rovers languishing in the Championship bottom three.

While Gallagher was delighted with the quality of his goal - his sixth for the club since arriving on loan from Southampton in the summer - he was disappointed that it didn’t earn the three points.

“It’s frustrating that any goal is not a match winner, especially at home in front of the fans,” he said. “That’s maybe what we need to do a bit better.

“Even if we do get the lead we still need to keep playing the way we’re playing and push on, rather than we get the goal and then sit off and let teams attack us.

"We’ve been in this position too many times now and it’s something we need to sort out, and I’m sure we will.”

Gallagher admitted the strike was one of the best of his senior career, but insists he won’t get ‘carried away’ by the praise it has earned.

He added: “I was extremely happy with it.

“It’s just one of those ones where you don’t really feel it hit your foot, it just comes off so cleanly.

“To see it hit the back of the net was really good.

“At senior level that’s right up there - I’m chuffed to bits with it.

“I’m a grounded guy so I’m not going to get too carried away, but one or two more of them would be alright.”

Gallagher had a great chance to put Rovers 2-0 up in the second half when he received a cross from Marvin Emnes but could only fire into the legs of Wolves sub goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.

He accepted responsibility for that miss, but also feels Rovers were on the wrong end of a decision for the equaliser when Wolves had three players offside in the build-up.

The 21-year-old said: “Being 1-0 up is always a dangerous scoreline so I was disappointed not to get the second.

“It’s one where the keeper has dived and it’s come off his legs, so I need to be a bit more clinical there.

“But that’s what people say about teams at the bottom of the league; it just seems to go against you.

“We’re going to do our best to climb the table and I’m sure these decisions will start turning and we’ll start to get a bit of luck.

“It’s hard for any team to take. It’s hard on the pitch and it’s probably even harder afterwards when you’re reviewing the game.

“There’s obviously things we can do to stop the ball getting in that position anyway, but we’ll work hard on the training field and hopefully it won’t happen again.”
