Coyle, when asked for his thoughts on how damaging a week it has been for English football, said: “We all love the game, we certainly feel it’s the best game in the world, and of course it’s been a difficult week.

“It’s been difficult in the respect of Sam Allardyce, who I know well, and ultimately landed his dream job as manager of England. You know how patriotic he is, Sam loves his country, and I thought he was well positioned to do really well with the England national team.

“It’s sad in many ways. A number of things which led to that don’t normally happen every day of the week.

“Having said we’ve got to make sure the game is seen in a positive light and the quality and how special a game it is. I think it’s important that we do that, move on and be positive about everything we do.”

Coyle continued: “Because I’m in the football community I’m not sitting here sticking up for people I know well and people I like and everything else.

“But you’ve got to understand as well, that wasn’t, to my mind, in terms of undercover work, somebody working within a football environment saying this happened or that happened.

“This was something that was totally invented; these phantom investors and everything else. It wasn’t really a full set of circumstances as such that something happened and that somebody pressed the button and said, ‘that wasn’t right’.

“That’s not what happened. Whatever way they’ve been lured to those meetings, or whatever way you want to call it, and I think Sam’s said himself it was an error of judgment and naïve.

“But again I’m all for transparency and certainly that’s the way forward.”
