Blackburn Rovers and Three Lions fan Adam Smith believes the experience of following England is now similar to supporting his club.

The 25-year-old said: “It is kind of like following Blackburn. You have a good day out, a few beers and at the end of it think ‘It is shame about the result’. It was a bit devastating but the whole thing was still worth it. It was a great experience and England made it happen.”

He attended all of England’s group games in France and had planned to get tickets for their last-16 tie.

However, he ended up buying tickets for the last-16 match in Paris on Saturday, June 25, the game England would have played in had they topped the group.

However, after drawing against Slovakia, England had to play on Monday night in Nice — and the marketing manager decided that ultimately it was not worth the hassle arranging travel and getting tickets.

Reflecting on a tournament he had thought would offer so much promise, Mr Smith believes England ultimately were not good enough.

He said: “We were really hopeful and confident going into it. We had the whole route planned out.

“In the end the team did not carry anything. Iceland were a decent team, and the Slovakia match had shown the problems with Roy’s tactics.

“We had £50 million players who just were not doing anything.”

Blackburn season-ticker holder Paul Le Clercq has seen England compete at several tournaments and feels that following the team is a fantastic experience, regardless of results.

He attended the group-stage game against Russia, which was marred by violence, but still finds the experience of tournament football fantastic.

He said: “I had a fantastic time — it has not put me off at all. I have been to lots of tournaments. I have followed England in Portugal and Germany, and been to away games in Moscow. It is a great experience.”

Fellow Blackburn fan Paul Salmon had a great time in the tournament, despite the early exit. He said: “I really enjoyed it. We were in Nice and everyone got on, English fans, French fans, everybody.”
