OUT-OF-CONTRACT defender Tommy Spurr has left Blackburn Rovers to join Lancashire rivals Preston North End.

The 28-year-old has signed a three-year deal at Deepdale and will link up with his new teammates later this week.

Spurr, who arrived at Ewood Park from Doncaster Rovers in 2013, played 84 games for Rovers, including 26 last season under Gary Bowyer and then Paul Lambert.

He was one of eight first team players whose contracts ran out at the end of the season and has decided to make the move along the M65 instead of committing to new Rovers boss Owen Coyle.

Spurr said: "It's exciting to be a part of something and feel wanted. Preston have given me that opportunity and I'm delighted to get it done.

"As soon as Preston showed their interest, the way they played last year and the information I got from the gaffer about the type of group there is here, it really appealed to me.

"I'm delighted to have signed and I'm looking forward to getting started this week.

"I can't wait to get going, to get training and to meet everyone and get playing games."

Speaking of his three years at Rovers, he said: "I loved it and there are some really good lads there.

"But I felt a bit more wanted at Preston so it was an easy decision for me."

Coyle confirmed earlier this month that Spurr had been offered fresh terms by the club but had yet to sign.

He said at the time: "We have spoken with Tommy and with his agent and, if there’s a deal to be done with Blackburn Rovers, then that’s one we’d certainly like to conclude.

“Having said that I’m sure his agent will have been speaking to a number of clubs in those weeks since the season ended."
