BLACKBURN Rovers need a manager who is going to get the best out of the players he will inherit – and Neil Warnock is one of those managers.

He’s got a track record of getting the most out the players at his disposal and, if we’re not going to have money to spend, we need somebody like that, because I still feel we’ve got good players.

The two centre-backs, Grant Hanley and Shane Duffy, were the best in the league this season, in my eyes. Ben Marshall is better further forward but he did a great job at full-back while Jason Steele had a steady season.

You’ve just got to hope they stay at the club, and the manager who comes in has the ability to get that extra 10 per cent out of the players that are not at the same level.

If a manager like that comes in, and still can’t get drag out an improvement, then it might be time to move those players on.

It was clear that Paul Lambert wanted to do that, hence why he wanted a little bit more finance to bring in players who he thought were better than what we’ve got.

Would Neil Warnock want cash? Only time will tell.

But the prospect of him only wanting to manage for one more season wouldn’t put me off. You could set something in stone well before then.

You could get someone already at the football club to work underneath and work with him, or equally you could look outside the club.

There are lots of ways it could be done and you’ve got to remember, it’s different from the old days.

Back then a manager would manage, train and coach – he’d basically do everything. Now a manager can take less responsibility if he has trusted lieutenants beside him.

But, whether it’s Neil Warnock or not, we need to be make an appointment as soon as possible.

We’ve got eight players out of contract and more going back to their parent clubs. Ideally we would have been talking to them three or four months ago. I feel sorry for the players. They are in limbo.

You would not blame their agents, then, if they are touting their clients around.

If we don’t want to keep those players, then fair enough, but they will need replacing, and with players that are on free transfers, there is always the danger it will end up in an auction, with the club willing to pay the most for wages coming out on top.

We’re not in a position to do that.

Meanwhile, there are still places left at my G8 Soccer School behind Salesbury Memorial Hall between Tuesday, May 31 and Friday, June 3 for children aged eight to 13.
