BLACKBURN Rovers midfielder Chris Taylor has told his team-mates they must turn their Championship season around today.

Rovers stopped the rot on Monday when they won their rearranged FA Cup tie at Newport County to end a six-match sequence without a success.

But they head to Charlton Athletic this afternoon chasing their first win in the league in six weeks.

Charlton are in even worse form having lost six and drawn four of their last 10 Championship outings.

And Taylor, who is line to start the Valley encounter after catching the eye of Paul Lambert against Newport, said: “It wasn’t a league game (on Monday) but it stopped the rot of losing games and it was a win.

“It doesn’t matter the opposition, it doesn’t matter who it came against it, it was a win and it should give us some confidence for the trip to Charlton, who are struggling.

“We want to push on at the right end of the table now.

“We’ve fallen quite a bit behind the play-offs but we need to push on to the top half and keep away from that relegation.”

Rovers moved within two points of the top six when they won 1-0 at home to Rotherham United seven league games ago.

But they will head to the Valley this afternoon just five points above the bottom three after losing four and drawing two of their last six Championship matches.

Taylor has watched most of Rovers’ decline down the standings from the substitutes’ bench.

But, after impressing on only his second start under Lambert, he is hoping to retain his starting spot against the Addicks.

“I’m hoping so,” said Taylor. “Every time you get an opportunity all you can do is try and impress and I feel like I’ve done that in a way.

“I’ve found myself out of the team a bit the last few games but that’s football. You’ve got to grit your teeth, get on with it and when your time comes take your chance to shine.

“Obviously results haven’t been good and I’m hoping that turns around this weekend.

“We need a win whoever is playing. We need to get a win to get back on track.”

Lambert said of Taylor’s performance on Monday: “I thought he was very good.

“He’s not played as much as he would have liked but I thought his pass for the penalty was an excellent pass and his overall contribution I thought was excellent.”

The hard-fought 2-1 victory over Newport, achieved with 10 men after striker Chris Brown was sent off 10 minutes into the Rodney Parade clash, has lifted spirits in the Rovers camp.

And Taylor said: “It was a tough game and, being down to 10 men for 80-85 minutes, the lads really had to dig in and stick together.

“I thought second half we deserved it because we created chances and played some really good stuff.

“First half we were under the cosh but second half once we went two up front, and the midfield lads joined in, I thought it was a good all-round performance, very professional, and we’re happy to go through.

“Now we need to get another win on Saturday.”
