BLACKBURN Rovers great Alan Shearer has told Rudy Gestede he has to do more to help struggling Aston Villa survive in the Premier League.

Gestede made a flying start to his Villa career after making a £6m summer switch from Championship outfit Rovers.

He netted the winners in their one and only Premier League victory at Bournemouth on the opening day and in their Capital One Cup success over bitter rivals Birmingham City.

Gestede, who top-scored for Rovers last season, then bagged a brace in Villa’s 3-2 loss at Liverpool to make it four goals in eight games.

But he has failed to find the net in his last 10 matches and he was dragged off in his rock-bottom side’s 2-0 home loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

And Match of the Day pundit Shearer said: “I know he’s come from the Championship and I know he’s come into a struggling team but he has to offer more. More movement.

“It’s not just about crosses coming into the box. He has to try and face up and give his team an option. At the minute he’s not giving enough options to his midfielder.

“There’s no movement from him running in behind, there’s no movement from him trying to affect the game. Demand the ball, demand someone passes the ball to you and show up.

“But he’s not; he’s actually hiding behind his midfielders, he’s not giving his midfielders or his defenders enough options to hit him with the ball.

“It’s all right the ball going wide but then he can’t just be a centre-forward who attacks the ball at crosses.

“When you’re not scoring goals you have to give something else, you have to face up, you have to run in behind.

“Otherwise your manager and your team are going to have problems.”
