WRONG CALLS

They say luck evens itself out over the course of a campaign and, if that’s the case, Rovers are building up some credit in the fortune bank.

A handball condemned them to defeat against Wolves and the failure of the officials to spot the ball had crossed the line robbed them of a point against Fulham.

And it looked set to be a fresh tale of woe on Saturday when Hull went in front seconds after Curtis Davies fouled Jordan Rhodes when clean through.

As Rhodes said himself, having opened up the goal, why go down in that situation if he had not been pushed? It was another bad call in a season that has been littered with them.

JORDAN RHODES

Former Rovers striker and Lancashire Telegraph columnist Kevin Gallacher has long said that if you give Rhodes three chances, he will take one of them – and that was the case again at the KC Stadium.

After seeing a header saved and a volleyed opportunity come and go, Rhodes made no mistake in injury-time to earn Rovers the point they deserved. His ability to make space in a congested area is something that cannot be taught.

And, while his finishing prowess is the result of hours and hours of graft on the training field, he still makes it look all so easy, like he did on Saturday. That’s 79 goals in 150 games now for Rovers.

Lancashire Telegraph:

HOPE AKPAN

The promising partnership between Danny Guthrie and Corry Evans has been one of the key contributing factors in Rovers’ upturn in results in recent weeks.

It came as a blow, then, when Guthrie came off early on against the Tigers with a thigh injury.

It was a blow softened, however, by the performance of his replacement Hope Akpan. Impressing on his return to the club where he had a loan spell earlier on in his career, the Nigeria international came desperately close to winning it for Rovers with a volley he probably could not have hit any sweeter.

And with Jason Lowe set for an extended spell on the sidelines, Akpan has a real opportunity to become a key player.
