ADAM Henley says Blackburn Rovers’ winless start to the season has come as a shock to the players.

Rovers’ run without a league victory stretched to five matches on Friday night when they drew 0-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers.

That means they will go into the international break fourth from bottom in the Championship standings with just three points to their name.

Henley admits the longer the sequence goes on the harder it will become to secure a maiden success of the campaign.

But, given the number of chances Rovers are carving out, the right-back remains confident they will get off the mark when they return to action at Fulham on Sunday week.

“Everyone is shocked in there (the dressing room),” said Henley, who is hoping to make his international debut for Wales in their Euro 2016 qualifier away to Cyprus tonight.

“We can’t believe we’ve not managed to get that first win because we know we’ve got the quality in the squad.

“It’s just a matter of waiting and doing all that we can to get it.

“But at the same time the longer it goes the harder it becomes – and that’s why we’ll be making sure we get it as soon as possible.

“And we’re confident it will come. Teams go through periods like we are currently going through, you see it all the time.

“We’re putting everything into it but we’re just struggling to find the back of the net at the moment.

“I was saying to a couple of the lads that sooner or later we’ll score three or four.

“It’s going to be a tough time for us, with us not getting these wins, but I’m sure the team will pull together and, during and after the international break, we’ll get down to work and look to get that first win.”

Rovers have had to start their preparations for the Sky-live showdown with Fulham without Henley and the five other players who are away on senior international duty.

Henley said: “There have been a batch of new players coming into the club and I’m sure they’ll all be great additions because you can see their quality in training.

“But sometimes you do need time to gel as a team so in that respect the international break has come at a good time for us, to concentrate on that, and work on the things we’re looking to produce on the pitch.”

Wales sit three points clear at the top of their Euro 2016 qualification group after a superb 1-0 home victory over Belgium in June.

And should they win tonight’s Nicosia clash, and follow that up with another success over Israel at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday, it could be enough to seal their place at a major finals for the first time since 1958.

“It’s a massive week for the team and for the country,” said Henley, who is joined in the Wales squad by Rovers’ on-loan Leicester City winger Tom Lawrence.

“Two wins would put us in a great position of qualification, which is wanted by everyone.

“It would be a fantastic achievement but it’s important that the whole team goes into the games with the same focus that we did for the Belgium game in the summer and treat every game as important as it is.”

Henley made his comeback against Bolton from the overnight illness that ruled him and Jason Lowe out of the previous weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Asked what happened, the Academy graduate said: “It was just one of those things that you can’t do anything about.

“It must have been something I ate but credit to the squad, it wasn’t a great position to be put in, but they went out there and did a good job, even though we didn’t get a result.”

Henley added: “I’ve been here through the years and it has been a rollercoaster at times.

“But we really do have a good group of lads at the moment. Everyone pulls in for each other and we really work as a team and, once we get that first win, I can only see positives going forward.”
