DANNY Guthrie has become Blackburn Rovers’ third signing of the summer.

The former Liverpool and Newcastle United midfielder, who was a free agent after leaving Championship rivals Reading in May, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal after impressing in last Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Bury and Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Wigan Athletic.

Guthrie, who will come into contention for this Saturday’s league opener at home to Wolves, said: “It’s been a long summer but I’m delighted to get it done and be ready and available for the first game.

“The gaffer made it quite clear that he really wanted me to join the club and felt strongly about what I could bring to the side.

“Every player wants to hear that from their manager and know that they’re going to be potentially an important part of the squad.

“Having said that, Blackburn is a massive club, it’s a big draw and meeting the lads and training with them, there’s some very good players.

“I’ve really enjoyed the past week. There’s a good group of lads, good staff, I’ve fitted in really well, everyone has been really good with me, I’ve really enjoyed training, and obviously the facilities are top drawer.

“I loved playing at the stadium at the weekend. That gave me a feel for it, so all the boxes have been ticked.

“Obviously I haven’t been here for the whole pre-season, but the lads have had a good pre-season, they look fit and ready to give it a really good go this season.”

Lancashire Telegraph:

Guthrie, 28, had interest from a number of Premiership and Championship clubs.

His agent, Ajay Mahan, of SME International, said: “Blackburn is a fantastic club for Danny to sign for.

“We have had several players previously signed to the club, all of which speak highly about the club’s professionalism and support.

“We wish Danny and the club all the best in their quest to get back into the Premiership, where they deserve to be.”

Guthrie follows French duo Sacha Petshi and Fode Koita as Rovers boss Gary Bowyer’s summer acquisitions.
