BLACKBURN Rovers boss Gary Bowyer says he will hold discussions tomorrow about whether to retain trialists Jeffrey Sarpong and Maic Sema.

The duo both played in tonight’s 2-0 friendly win at Tranmere Rovers, with Ghanaian right winger Sarpong netting in the 76th minute from long range.

Swedish left winger Sema hit the crossbar and created a couple of good chances for others but Bowyer says he must still weigh up whether any new signings will improve his squad – particularly given the transfer embargo Rovers are currently under.

“They did all right, it’s always difficult for any trialists coming in, they’ve been with us for a couple of days, their attitudes are fine and they showed signs tonight,” Bowyer said.

“But we have to try to make sure that whoever we bring in under the restrictions of the embargo can really make a difference to our first team. That’s the challenge.”

Asked whether they would stay with Rovers beyond tonight’s match, Bowyer said: “We’ll see in the morning and have the conversation.

“We’ve got a limited number of places available and we’ll just assess that and try to come up with the right decisions.”

Bowyer also fielded new signing Sacha Petshi in what was another otherwise youthful line-up.

“I think we had a very good work-out,” he said.

“We had some injuries on Thursday and Friday, and we didn’t want to risk the players we had down to come here.

“They won’t be involved tomorrow either so we decided to come with a very youthful side here, but we knew it would be a great test for them against a very good Tranmere team.

“Gary Brabin has very quickly assembled a good team and it was a great test for our lads.

“I’m delighted for them because there were a couple of trialist boys playing, the rest were all under 21 and I thought they applied themselves very well and towards the end they showed signs of dominating it.

“I was pleased with Sacha, to get 90 minutes under his belt was really good and he showed signs that he’s getting stronger and better, and he has done ever since he’s been with us, day by day.

“He still needs a proper pre-season but he’s getting stronger.”
